BNY and Citadel complete tokenized Treasury repo transaction
BNY and Citadel Securities completed a transaction in which a two-year US Treasury note was recorded on BNY’s private digital ledger and used as collateral for overnight financing. The companies said settlement took minutes, compared with the conventional T+1 cycle; they did not disclose the transaction’s value. BNY described it as the first use of tokenized assets on a major triparty repo platform, not the first tokenization of US government securities globally.
What changed This transaction settled in minutes rather than the conventional next-business-day cycle; it does not establish a market-wide change.
Why it matters For institutional borrowers, the useful demonstration is that a newly settled digital Treasury representation could support cash borrowing—not merely sit on a ledger.
What to watch next BNY expects to extend settlement operating hours, potentially covering European and Asian trading hours in 2027; that expansion remains prospective.
