Major U.S. banks frame tokenization as a growth opportunity, not a replacement
Executives at Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley described potential uses for blockchain-based assets in trading, payments, settlement and wealth management during October earnings calls. Wells Fargo said it is processing some cross-border transfers using tokenized deposits, while Goldman and Morgan Stanley outlined areas they are exploring. None gave a specific tokenization revenue forecast, and the banks are at different stages of deployment.
Why it matters For Wells Fargo's cross-border customers, the reported benefit is faster receipt of funds. For the bank, tokenized deposits could support international expansion without a large overseas branch network, although volumes remain small.
What to watch next The unresolved commercial test is whether pilots generate meaningful transaction volumes and recurring revenue; the banks supplied no revenue forecasts.
