Stablecoin freezes immobilize billions in Binance theft, but $3.33 billion remains beyond direct control
Elliptic estimated that about $2.84 billion of the roughly $6.43 billion Binance theft had been frozen by October 30, while approximately $3.33 billion remained in assets that token issuers could not directly freeze. Tether and Circle accounted for most of the stablecoin freezes, but Elliptic said attackers converted about $786 million into ETH and TRX before restrictions took effect. Binance said it would cover customer losses; that commitment is separate from recovering assets still held by attackers.
Binance’s explanation broadened from a compromised employee laptop to additional intrusion points; the complete attack sequence remains unresolved.
