Microsoft patches actively exploited Windows flaw that bypasses Mark of the Web
Microsoft fixed CVE-2026-96951, a Windows Shell command-injection flaw that attackers can trigger when a user opens a malicious file, bypassing Mark of the Web protections. Help Net Security reports that Microsoft’s October release addressed more than 1,400 bugs and also included fixes for SharePoint and wormable vulnerabilities; exploitation of CVE-2026-96951 was confirmed in the wild.
What changed Microsoft has released a fix for a Windows Shell vulnerability already being used by attackers, giving defenders a patchable target rather than only a malicious-file risk to manage.
Why it matters Windows users who open a crafted file can lose the warnings, restricted viewing or blocking that would normally interrupt execution. The required user action limits the attack path, but does not preserve those safeguards once the file is opened.
What to watch next It remains unresolved whether this flaw addresses another incomplete fix or whether its exploitation is connected to APT28; neither link is established.
