Critical PHP flaws enable unauthenticated remote code execution; Rapid7 urges emergency updates
Rapid7 says CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 can allow unauthenticated remote code execution on PHP installations serving web requests, and rates both critical at CVSS v4 9.2. The flaws involve memory corruption during out-of-memory handling and stale state reused between requests; Rapid7 reports confirmed exploit paths and says exploitation research was being independently reproduced. PHP fixed the issues in versions 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27 and 8.5.12, and Rapid7 recommends updating outside normal patch cycles.
What changed The October 21 security releases provide complete fixes for both flaws; older releases in the supported 8.2–8.5 branches require an update or a vendor package containing both patches.
Why it matters For operators using Apache mod_php, application-level checks may offer no protection against the demonstrated startup attack: execution can occur before application code runs.
What to watch next Whether a viable exploit becomes public is an immediate open question. Rapid7 reported independent reproduction indications as of October 21, but described public release as expected, not confirmed.
