Israeli election count leaves both major blocs short of a majority
With 72.4% of votes counted, Israeli media projections put Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc at 54 seats and the opposition bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot at 48 in the 120-seat Knesset. Predominantly Arab parties were projected to win 18 seats; neither major bloc was projected to reach the 61 seats needed for a majority, according to the report.
Why it matters On these projections, neither Netanyahu nor Eisenkot could command a majority using only his existing bloc, making support beyond those blocs necessary to reach 61 seats.
